BEGINNERS GAME BASED SKATING PROGRAM

For beginner skaters, you have learn to skate and beginner hockey programs.  In addition to these programs, I believe there is a need for a fun, game/play-based program.

The idea is to bring together a group of 12 – 16 skaters, ages ~3 – 5 years old.  Players who have been skating already (no “walkers”) but are not quite ready to or are just beginning hockey.  Practices would be game, competition-based practices built around skating (limited to no stick & puck use).

Fun, game-based practices will naturally improve a player’s skating, edge work, agility, and balance.  The unstructured nature of games keeps more skaters moving, increases time moving on the ice (reps) and naturally challenges the skater to push their ability.  Game examples include Tag, Sharks & Minos, Soccer, Relay Races, Stopwatch events, Tic -Tac- Toe, Hungry – Hungry – Hipos to name a few.

COST

My son will be part of this program; therefore, I am not looking to make money on this program but use my resources and knowledge to get this group off the ground.  Cost would be based on the number of players in the program and just be split among all involved.

Approximate costs are $10/skate – $110 total for season (group of 16 players) to $13/skate – $143 total for season (group of 12 players).  The plan is to have the group set by October 1st, then confirm with all families the final number and cost of the program.  Everyone would have until October 10th to give final confirmation of participation and pay for their spot for the season.

SCHEDULE

11 total ice times between October 29th and March 17th.  This program is meant to compliment players being in a learn to skate or beginners’ hockey program.  Therefore, it is not every week but approximately every other week with no ice over major holiday weekends.

DATES, TIME, LOCATION

Sundays, 4:30 – 5:30pm @ Riverside (Bud Bakewell) Arena.  Oct 29th, Nov 12th, Nov 19th, Dec 10th, Dec 17th, Jan 7th, Jan 21st, Feb 4th, Feb 18th, March 3rd, March 17th.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

Looking to put together a group of ~12 – 16 players, ~age 3 – 5 years old.  No walkers to be used.  Players should already have skating experience and have the ability to move around the ice on their own but do not need to have the basics of skating down.  Message mark@markzarbohockey.com with questions.

VOLUNTEERS

Ideally need 4 – 5 on -ice volunteers for each practice (1:3 ratio).  Costs for this program do not include a coaching staff.  The approximate cost is only splitting the ice rental among the families.  No coaching card or credentials are needed to volunteer to be on ice.  Anyone interested should contact mark@markzarbohockey.com with their interest.

EQUIPMENT

Players are required to wear; hockey helmet with cage, gloves, shin pads, elbow pads, hockey pants.  Shoulder pads are optional.  Hockey sticks should be brought to practices but used sparingly.

PUCKS & STICKS

The purpose of these practices is for players to work at their skating, balance, and agility on the ice in an unstructured format.  All games played will be based around encouraging skating and movement.  Sticks & pucks will be used if or when appropriate but is not guaranteed.  This will be based on the group’s ability.  Free time could also be part of the practice.  During free time players would be allowed to have sticks, pucks if they choose.  Players should bring a stick with them to each practice it just may or may not be used.

HAVE IDEAS?!

The whole purpose of this program is fun for the kids.  As it gets going, the kids will be the ones to drive what games and the light structure of what we do as it moves along.  If you have ideas of games or competitions or things to be added to the program to make this fun for the kids, contact mark@markzarbohockey.com.  All ideas are welcome.
