Pre- Tryout 2 Day Checking Camp

When players move from non-hitting to hitting hockey the game changes in many ways.  Checking can either make a player more effective or less effective.  Checking is a skill and players who understand how to use their bodies and protect the puck will be more effective players then players who do not.

The purpose of this camp is to teach players how to use checking to make themselves better players– correct checking technique, how to give and take a hit, learn how to properly protect the puck and use their body to create scoring chances or separate the opposition from the puck.

Players will be split into small groups to ensure they are getting lots of 1 on 1 attention and repetitions in all drills. Groups will be made based on player’s age and level of play to ensure players will be competing against someone of their own caliber.

Group #1:  Friday March 1st & Monday March 4th        5:30 – 7:00pm        Bud Bakewell (Riverside) Rink

Group #2:  Friday March 1st & Monday March 4th        7:00 – 8:30pm        Bud Bakewell (Riverside) Rink

**Players MUST be able to attend both days & times (March 1st & 4th).  This is a 2-session program.  Price reflects 3 hours of total ice.  Use sign up form to select what group you would like to attend.  If group interested does not appear on sign up form under Pre-Tryout 2 Day Checking tab then that means it has been filled.

Cost is $60 (3 hours On-Ice)

2010, 2011 birth years

**Players are split into small groups by birth year, level of play and size**

   Session #1

Players will learn all the basics of checking: proper checking technique, how give/take a hit, how to take a hit along the wall, as well as body contact, puck protection and positioning skills along the boards.

Session #2

This session will focus on “playing in contact.”  This is the idea that when you have the puck you want to use checking/body contact to protect the puck/yourself.  Many players when they have the puck are not physical and allow themselves to get hit.  This session we will focus on being physical with the puck not only to protect yourself, but this gives you best opportunity to protect the puck and make plays.
